SEM Works AMERICA E-NEWSLETTER, Volume 16, 2010

In the past, many interesting issues have surfaced in the world of higher education that has effected how we approach education today. In some cases, a "then" versus "now" look may reflect a marked difference in the nature of the issue and demonstrate just how far the matter has evolved over time. For example, in just a few short years there has been a significant roller coaster of events surrounding the issue of enrolling undocumented immigrants. Whereas in 2007 the North Carolina Community College System suspended all such enrollments, as recently as September 2009 this decision has been reversed and undocumented immigrants are once again allowed to enroll in community colleges across that state.

SEM Works CANADA E-NEWSLETTER, Volume 13, 2010

Colleges and universities across the country are investing in international recruitment and partnerships to enhance institutional revenues, bolster enrolment at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as diversify the enrolment mix to enrich the learning experience. The April 2009 edition of SEM Canada (volume 5) focused on trends and issues in international student recruitment within the Canadian context. This January issue of SEM Canada presents recent information in the news that is specific to select countries that constitute the largest enrolment draw for Canada as reported by Statistics Canada. These include: China, USA, India, South Korea, Iran, Japan, and Mexico, among other emerging markets. This edition also profiles Canadian institutions and jurisdictions on the move, and includes informational resources that may add additional insights in the development of international recruitment strategies.

SEM Works AMERICA E-NEWSLETTER, Volume 15, 2009

As institutions of higher learning move into the second half of the fall semester, two key enrollment challenges loom on the horizon. The first challenge is that of recruitment. Recruitment in higher education, as discussed by Lucia Tyler in this article, has been forever altered by the advancement of technology as well as the changing face of admissions. For many colleges and universities, November is a time of wrapping up recruitment efforts. Many others are already processing applications for fall 2010 as well as starting to make offers to particularly attractive prospects.

SEM Works CANADA E-NEWSLETTER, Volume 12, 2009

Perhaps the single greatest change in current societal values is a shared concern for environmental sustainability. Many institutions across the country have made a commitment to improve sustainability practices. Some institutions have adopted sustainability as a strategic priority and have introduced strategies that are shaping their student recruitment practices, academic curriculum, student life programs, in addition to their administrative practices. The recently released GreenReportCard.org is the first website to provide in-depth sustainability profiles for hundreds of colleges in all 50 states in the U.S. and Canada. See the results. The report offers ideas and resources to prospective students for using this information in selecting an institution of choice and for becoming involved in encouraging more sustainability initiatives at their school.

SEM Works AMERICA E-NEWSLETTER, Volume 14, 2009

SEM America, vol. 14 is the second newsletter in a two-part series describing how an organization can be understood through four distinct systems operating in tandem with one another. In an article written in 2003 by Bolman & Deal, they describe these four organizational frames as structural, political, human resource, and symbolic. Where last month’s e-newsletter took a look at the structural and political frames, this month’s e-newsletter offers articles as they relate to the human resource and symbolic frames.
